Making the diagnosis

To find out if you have diabetes, and which type, your doctor will conduct a series of tests. He will take your blood samples to do a blood glucose test to check your blood sugar levels. This often requires that a person fast 8 hours before the test. If your blood glucose levels fall outside of the normal blood glucose range, your doctor may conduct more tests.

Another test your doctor will conduct is a urine test. Glucose or ketone bodies (waste products) in the urine are often characteristic of people with type 1 diabetes. Similarly, protein and sugar in the urine are often characteristic of people with type 2 diabetes.

Ask your doctor for more information, and how you can prepare for your tests.
